Autumn Newsletter 2008

The rainfall so far in July and August has been the highest, well since last year! At least the countryside looks lush and green, hopefully we will have a dry autumn so we can make the most of the lovely autumn colours and enjoy some last minute sunshine.  Still, the sun has shone intermittently and we at Positive Living hope you have enjoyed your summer and made the most of the weather.

If you enjoyed the Olympics this summer it might have inspired you to take up a sport.  If you put in Olympian effort here is a list of calories you can burn in an hour-

Table Tennis 310
Judo 405
Cycling 440
Swimming 460
Canoeing 405

Having a massage after a workout will help speed up your body’s recovery, improving function, less swelling and fewer signs of inflammation.

We will be celebrating our 6th birthday this November and have some fantastic special offers on for you. Book early to avoid disappointment, you can take advantage of as many offers as you like, but it is first come first served!

The centre has evolved and changed in many ways since the beginning with therapists coming and going and the range of treatments and workshops we offer being expanded every year.  We would like to thank Lin, Ann H and Anne K who have been here since day one and have all helped Tina make the centre the lovely relaxing place it is.

We would like to thank all of you who completed the customer survey in the summer. Your comments and recommendations are being noted and we are looking at how we can make the improvements that have been suggested, overall you all seem to agree we are doing a great job.

One of the suggestions was to open on Mondays, as some of you would like to experience treatments on your day off. We have made the decision to open for beauty and some therapies, between 11am and 3pm on Mondays from the 13th October 2008.

 Unwanted visitors

These live on the scalp and their bite cause intense itching. Their tiny eggs (nits) attach to the hair shaft close to the scalp. They are common at this time of year when the kids have gone back to school, they can affect adults as well as children, they are especially easy for girls to catch as they tend to put their heads together.

DIY doctor head lice

Step 1 Generously apply olive oil all over the hair to suffocate the lice.

Step 2 Wear a shower cap for at least 12 hours or overnight.

Step 3 Comb hair through with nit comb.

Step 4 Wash hair and condition -repeat process after 7 days.

Mood Management

Your mind may be where your moods originate but they certainly do not stay there – they affect your physical health. 193 volunteers, with no medical problems were interviewed in the United States for two weeks every day by researchers about the positive and negative emotions that they experienced.  The researchers then exposed the volunteers to a cold or flu virus. The results showed that fewer of the positive thinkers fell ill, and that if they did they had less severe symptoms of the viruses than those that experienced higher levels of negative emotions.

Happiness is a by-product of a life that is lived well!

  Why do we celebrate Halloween?

The 3 days between 31st October and 2nd November see pagan and Christian celebrations intertwined in a fascinating way.  All Hallows eve is followed by all hallows day and the next day is all souls day the 3 day period is a perfect example of superstition struggling with religious belief.

Some fascinating facts and ideas about Halloween

Ø      Halloween dates back over 2000 years to the Celts.

Ø      It is thought that the colours orange and black became Halloween colours because orange is associated with Harvest and black is associated with death.

Ø      Black cats were originally believed to protect witches powers from negative forces.

Ø      A pumpkin is really a squash, and comes from the same family as the cucumber.

Ø      About 99% of pumpkins sold are used as Jack O’ Lanterns at Halloween.

Ø      Ringing bells scares evil spirits away.

Ø      If you see a spider on this night it could be a sprit of a dead one visiting you.

Ø      The biggest pumpkin in the world weighed a whooping 1,446 pounds.

Ø      To meet a witch put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards on Halloween Night. (If this works for you please let us know!)
